Abstract:

This article presents a Radial Basis Neural Network (RBNN) based islanding detection technique. Islanding detection and prevention is a mandatory requirement for grid-connected distributed generation (DG) systems. Several methods based on passive and active detection scheme have been proposed. While passive schemes have a large non detection zone (NDZ), concern has been raised on active method due to its degrading power quality effect. The main emphasis of the proposed scheme is to reduce the NDZ to as close as possible and to keep the output power quality unchanged. The proposed algorithm is compared with the widely used rate of change of frequency relays (ROCOF) and found working effectively in the situations where ROCOF fails. This approach utilizes rate of change of frequency at the target distributed generation location and fed to the radial basis neural network for intelligent islanding detection. Hence a better reliability is provided. This approach utilizes the artificial neural network (ANN) as a machine learning technology for processing and analyzing the large data sets provided from network simulations using MATLAB software. To validate the feasibility of this approach, the method has been validated through several conditions and different loading, switching operation, and network conditions. Simulation studies showed that the RBNN-based algorithm detects islanding situation accurate than other islanding detection algorithms. Moreover, for those regions which are in need of a better visualization, the proposed approach would serve as an efficient aid such that the mains power disconnection can be better distinguished

A new artificial neural network based method for islanding detection of distributed generators

This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) based method for islanding detection of distributed synchronous generators. The proposed method takes advantage of ANN as pattern classifiers. It is capable of identifying the islanding condition based on samples of the voltage waveform measured at the distributed generator terminals only, which is an important advantage over other ANN-base...

Radial basis function neural network for pulse radar detection

A new approach using a radial basis function network (RBFN) for pulse compression is proposed. In the study, networks using 13-element Barker code, 35-element Barker code and 21-bit optimal sequences have been implemented. In training these networks, the RBFN-based learning algorithm was used. Simulation results show that RBFN approach has significant improvement in error convergence speed (ver...

Face Detection Using a Modified Radial Basis Function Neural Network

Face detection from cluttered images is very challenging due to the diverse variation of face appearance and the complexity of image background. In this paper, we propose a neural network based approach for locating frontal views of human faces in cluttered images. We use a radial basis function network (RBFN) for separation of face and non-face patterns and the complexity of RBFN is reduced by...

Islanding Detection in Distributed Generation By Neuro-fuzzy Approach

The islanding methods are classified in terms of the islanding principle and the distributed Generation (DG). Islanding detection techniques are mainly divided into three types for distribution systems: Remote, local and communication based techniques. Passive methods are based on the information available on the DG site at the point of common coupling (PCC) with the utility grid. A new approac...
